The Shad are back…

The last couple weeks have been a roller coaster Wind ride. The hot days, cool nights and morning fog makes the wind build in the afternoon and go all night. Ive noticed lately that once the temperature at the lake reaches 80 degrees, the wind lady dies. When the weather cools in the evening, the wind lady lives again. The summer wind pattern is definitely in full swing. Today, the temperature was near 108 by 2:00 and there was barely a breeze on the lake all day. It was so hot that my daughter called me in the heat of the day to make sure I was ok. It is amazing how cool you can stay drinking cold water and P1020090covering every inch of your body. I hit the Bay of Pigs first thing fishing 10 to 20 feet of water all around including the dam and only scored two dinks. I headed to the trash racks at around 11:00 am and there were three fly fishermen working the racks. Vaughn Willett was there also. That guy can fish.  He always does well and gets his people on big fish.  Last week a kid in his boat fly fishing for stripers for the first time landed a 12 pounder. Seems I run in to Vaughn alot these past couple months. He and father\son flyfishing guests were pounding the Stripers inside the trash racks. I couldn’t believe how low the water was since the last time I was there–at least 20 to 30 feet down almost exposing all the post supporting the road to the pumps.  To think we were fishing to stripers holding where the surface of the lake is today only 3 weeks ago.  The Shad were back cruising the Romero Shoreline. I noticed them around 1:00PM.   I only managed 6 of them  this time.  I had changed out my shad rod to an Albright intermediate line that was way to light for the rod.  Lots of tangles and no power during crunch time.  I think a floating line is the ticket.  I farmed more shad than I landed today but Im going to properly line my shad rod for Monday if the wind dies down  Today (one day after)  the wind was blowing over 20mph all morning and afternoon!  It was completely calm yesterday all day.   It was a nice lucky weather day–6 stripers and 6 shad landed.  The forebay had 45 jetskiers and pleasure boaters frothing the water.  Best to avoid the forebay on hot Saturdays if you want to fish.
