Maui with the Family

In a rare event, Gina and I were able to plan a vacation with both our adult kids and Ryan (Mia’s boyfriend) at our favorite island destination-The Kanapalli Ali on Maui. Mark is heading to PA school at Rosalind Franklin Medical School, Chicago in June. After buying a new Subaru Crosstrek for the two year adventure in Midwest Snow, his girl friend (Phoebe) and him have planned a two week Europe vacation to celebrate Phoebe’s graduation from U of O the day after we return from Hawaii. Mia who has a regular spot on Charleston Television is busy promoting her business and choosing sponsors to support. We were extreamly lucky to have our busy children hang with us together in Maui for a week.

It was a fun week. Gina and I visited the Halliakula Volcano and I chickened out flying my Mavic drone into the crater for the money shot. I think its illegal to fly them in a National Park these days and I wasn’t quite sure if it was a no fly zone since there were occasional helicopters buzzing close by. Mark and I got to play a round of golf at the Kanapalli Mountain course. He has still got it from high school varsity golf and we got a great afternoon Tee Time and played the course alone for the day.

One of the highlights of the trip was searching for a bonefish flat in Maui to fish. I packed and eight wgt with some size 4 weighted shrimp flies and set out to find the famous Jon Jon flats… Jon Jon is probably the only fly fishing guide on Maui. His youtube videos of catching 10 lb bones on Maui are legendary. After figuring out what beaches he fishes on, Gina and I set out to find the best public access to those secret beaches. After locating them , I was surprised to find 5 other fly fishermen fishing that flat the first morning out. They all did what I did to find that beach and were vacationing with family who incidentally were elsewhere on the island. I talked with them and they were from all parts of the lower 48 -Colorado, Michigan and California. The bonefish on Maui are huge with the average being 10 lbs. It is definitely worth blindcasting all day for a shot at such a fish but if you are high enough and patient enough, you can spot bonefish swimming over the limited white sand flats on Jon Jon’s beach.  It wasn’t my week for a ten pounder.  I only had a day to try with the next day getting blown out by the winds.
