It was easier to fish together when we were kids. Wayne and I finally got a day together on the delta with renown guide Steve Santucci. I think we were due for some luck and the weather gods blessed the day with perfect weather and good fishing. We started our day driving to the launch at Brannan Island which is more centrally located from where we live-about an hour and a half from each of our homes. Highway 12 closed because of a fatal accident and wayne had to detour and we launched around 7:30. Steve Santucci’s 24 foot Yellowfin Bay with the 350 Merc might be the fastest boat on the delta and is possibly the best bay boat in the world. Its a fun ride for sure. Its a Casting Platform attached to a rocket and it certainly shrinks the size of the delta when you are on that boat.
We had a great day hunting for Big Fish. Although the 40 lber eluded us, we hooked and landed several double digit stripers and a couple came unbuttoned that were really big. We caught lots of over 18 inch fish and our totally for the day were all over 30 fish combined. Most of our day was beyond Sherman Island fishing in water we had never fished but we got educated in spotting water that big fish like . Steve is great teacher. What I most like about him is that he is completely open and honest about telling you techniques, locations and flies. Im especially in awe of his abilities on my home water-San Luis Reservoir. This year (last month) he landed 5 fish over 20 lbs one of them a whopping 40 lbs . Ironically he caught that the same day I fished the lake a week ago two. According to Steve, San Luis is the place to be this month and it is as good as it ever was in the old days for big fish. Im going to book a day with him next month to learn more. Ive been recharged about fishing the Big lake. This fish was caught LAST WEEK by Steve!
Wayne caught a fish today with a Live Crawdad in its mouth in Sherman Island. The crawdad was still moving and it was sticking out of the fishes mouth when it hit Wayne’s fly and somehow got hooked. That was a first,
I can’t say more about Steve Santucci and what great guide and person he is. In his 60’s, he still gets super excited when we catch fish. He gets up a 3:00 am to pick up his boat and get it to the launch by 7:00 and he does it nearly 200 days a year. I got to fish today with my two favorite guides–Wayne and Steve. Thanks again Steve for a great day.
Love the video. Especially the aerial shots. I’ve ever fly fished before but you sure make it look fun. Keep up the good work.
Awesome video and Steve is great. What little I know was from him and he got me hooked on flys for stripers.
