Doug Swisher November 7, 1932 ~ September 18, 2024

Doug Swisher is best known as a pioneering fly fisherman, author, and expert in the sport of fly fishing. He gained recognition for his contributions to the modern understanding of fly patterns and fishing techniques. Swisher co-authored the groundbreaking book Selective Trout (1971) with Carl Richards, which introduced innovative ideas about trout behavior and insect hatches that revolutionized fly fishing strategies.

Swisher also contributed to popularizing new fly designs, such as the No-Hackle Dry Fly, which mimics the natural movement of insects more closely than traditional flies. His work has influenced generations of anglers and continues to be a reference for those interested in the science and art of fly fishing.

My journey as a Fly Fishermen started with the book Selective Trout.  I had the honor of meeting him when I was a fly tyer for the Millpond and Creative Sports Enterprises in the early 70’s when he taught me how to tie his unique wings on his famous “No Hackle” dun patterns.   At that time, the Millpond was the only fly shop that was commercially selling  No-Hackle dry flies and I not only tied them ,  I swore they were the most effective flies on the most selective fish and used them as a “Hail Mary ” fly many times with success.

As years past,  re connected with Doug though my friendship with Bob Von Raesfeld who was one of Doug’s regular fishing buddies,    Doug continued  his innovations throughout his life inventing unique tying materials and fly patterns that are found in all my boxes.    He loved to fish the St Mary’s river in Alberta.

In Memory of Doug Swisher

A teacher, a master, with wisdom to share,
In rivers and currents, he wove through the air.
With feathers and thread, he tied life’s art,
Each delicate fly born straight from his heart.

Selective Trout, a book, a guide, a light,
It changed my course, gave new wings to flight.
He taught me the rhythm of water’s song,
The secrets of trout, where they belong.

His hands shaped nature in each small tie,
Crafting lures that made the rivers sigh.
Patient and kind, with each passing day,
He showed us the joy of life’s gentle sway.

Now the rivers whisper, the trout still rise,
In every cast, in every sky,
Doug’s spirit lingers, calm and bright,
A fly tying master, in eternal flight.
