The Last Striper of September

I thought that maybe today might be epic –no full moon, no wind, rain front coming.  I hit the calm lake at 8:30 behind 18 other boats all with the same idea.  No flyfishermen though.    At 9:00 am at The Racks, it was standing room only with fluke, bait and downrigger fishermen everywhere.  I got many weird looks as I pulled right up to the Trash Racks and started casting at the monoliths.  When I get really close to the trash racks,  I sometimes think of the monolith in 2001 A Space Odyssey.

I thought the fishing might be off the hook with the calm winds, cloud cover and a weather front coming in but it turned out to be just the opposite.  I fished the shorelines and the deep racks and caught 4 fish from 9:00 to 1:30 pm.  At least all 4 were over 18 inches.    I saw lots of fishermen catching fish on umbrella rigs trolled on downriggers.  Some were quiet nice. Seems the fish are still deep. Hopefully things will get better next week. I might hit the forebay next week for some variety.
