The Hook is great especial with a decent south.  The waves are fast and short which is tough on beginners and its a popular place for newbies because of its easy access and parking lot.   Definitely not a newbie beach though.  There is a lot of talk about violence and shit talk out on the waves from locals but if you respect the rules and show some skill and try not to cut anyone off,  its a great day. My sons favorite place to surf.
